015-SIL15 - Barite

Provenience : Muscadroxiu Mine, Silius, Cagliari Prov, Sardinia, Italy

Size: 17x15x13 cm

Absolutely an exceptional sample found in 1972 and acquired from a Silius miner in 1974, no very easy to photograph. It consists in a massive barite matrix supporting a group of large crystals. It can be considered an undamaged specimen as we can see only a two broken crystals just on the edge. The main crystal is a superb 10x8x5 cm hoppered chisel, still unmatched, as a Muscadroxiu barite, for size, colour and perfection. The natural colour is a amber brown with darker tips, under long and mid wave length U.V. light it shows a very intense warm yellow fluorescence. The U.V. picture has been taken using a 312 nm source.
